Scribkin: RSS Feed Mayhem

  • CannonGod · 1 year ago
I have to say I can't keep up with my old Google Feed, and have instead been relying on suggested links through FriendFeed which has been working out quite well for me.

I agree that a higher degree of feed customisation is necessary as I search more by tag than by site these days. I'm really excited for Yahoo's PIPES system that enables greater RSS filer control up to a point where quite elaborate mashups can be created! :¬)

Phil - For what it's worth, I've always found it helpful NOT to took at the so-called 'competition' or worry about 1 or 2 weeks worth of stats. In fact, wandering outside my regular 'focus group' occasionally yields surprising results. (IE: I now look at TechMeMe AFTER I've posted, never before). Your blog has been honest, upfront and delivered some 'good stuff', not to mention the fact that at this very moment you're smack dab in the middle of TechMeMe. I agree there's more bloggers (many of them thinking they're going to get rich overnight ... Ahhh!), also some excellent new writers. That will simply never end. Do your thing. Do it well. and, ..... keep on going! The traffic and personal rewards should follow.

Thanks Charlie! I definitely agree with you.. and I have tried hard to keep this blog 'honest', to whatever extent I feel that means to me.. lol. I'll be up front and say that I don't actually read TechMeme, in fact, I've been a much bigger supporter of RSSmeme (as evinced by the huge article I did on it and Benjamin Golub last week).

I noticed I was on TechMeme because I was checking my blog stats (I admit, I am a whore for blog stats) and I saw a huge spike in hits! Of course, I decided to hook it up it up while I could, because I knew I'd probably slide off the front page quickly and that would be that.

As part of this specific initiative, however, I will probably subscribe to the techeme headline RSS feed, to see if it gives me a good 'overview' of the popular news of the day. I'm really trying to fulfull two objectives here: first, I want to be able to get the best of what's big, without being overwhelmed, and then I want to be able to pick up as many small, new blogs as I can to find new talent, new posts, new ideas.

Also, thanks for checking out my blog and taking the time to comment. It means a lot!

Love this concept. Gonna join the movement and reset my RSS feeds! This is fantastic to focus on the interesting people and blogs rather than just the blogs that are popular. Rather than skimming a thousand posts a day reading a hundred completely will be much more fruitful. Great idea both of you!

Excellent, I'm glad to hear other people say it's an exciting concept, Caleb! And thanks for getting back to me so quickly to get my Toluu profile reset. Looking forward to where this project takes you!

Shameless plug: Another option to find content that matches your interests is Blern.com. Blern learns about you from your various online profiles (Friendfeed, delicious, digg, reddit, many more) and builds article recommendations based on your profile and not socially engineered "headlines".

As long as it relates to the article, I welcome your post! I'm definitely going to check out blern when I have another moment. Thanks for the plug!

Well, after some consideration I will join in as well. Though admittedly, just partly. My current OPML file will stay in FeedDemon (my reader of choice) and a stripped down one will be added to Google Reader. I will try this for a few weeks and see what works best.
  • Phil Glockner · 1 year ago
How is your take on the reset going? Have you written up your thoughts anywhere yet?
  • Carsten Pötter · 1 year ago
No, there's no write up about it anywhere. I haven't blogged since two weeks (I should change this, I guess). Well, the reset actually works. Though since I have the full OPML file in one reader, and the limited one in another I switch between both depending on time available. The past two days I hardly had any time to read feeds, so I just read the limited feeds. And I guess, I didn't miss any important news. So it works. :) Maybe I'll be brave enough to completely switch to the limited number of feeds.

Remember that exposing yourself to new blogs and new, low-volume sources of information is part of the program too! So go out there and subscribe to some new stuff, and share on Toluu.

I'm glad to hear that its working for you!
  • Carsten Pötter · 1 year ago
I have actually added some new feeds recently. :)

    Hi Phil,

Found out about this from Corvida. I'm doing the same thing (though not as in such an organized fashion as you and C:-)): http://www.thenewmediadiva.com/2008/06/11/rss-r...

Hi Rashunda! I read your post, good stuff! Welcome to the Reset.. be sure to write up your thoughts.. I'll be watching. ;)
